Going back in time: The Pirelli BS3
For those who don’t know, the Pirelli BS3 tyre was the first tyre with an interchangeable tread pattern.
That’s right! Drivers could switch the tread patterns on their tyres depending on the season.
This technology was quite straightforward. The tyre tread was mounted on three rings that were the same diameter as the actual tyre carcass. When the season changed, the old tread was changed out for a new one that was more appropriate for the weather.
However, due to emerging safety concerns and other issues, Pirelli ceased production of the BS3 tyre.
It was also very costly to manufacture as each component of the tyre needed to be vulcanised separately. Additionally, the machinery needed for its production was destroyed in 1962 by a devastating fire.
From then on, Pirelli focused on producing dedicated winter tyres like the future rally-winning MS-35.
