Pink slip inspection information

Pink slip report.

Pink slip inspection Kogarah

A "pink slip" is a report done by your mechanic to say your vehicle is safe and in good road condition. It’s also known as an eSafety certificate or roadworthy certificate.

In NSW, every light car older than 5 years requires a pink slip inspection before registration. Typically, your registration renewal papers will tell you whether or not your vehicle needs an inspection.

After passing the inspection, your mechanic will send a report to Transport for NSW online. If your vehicle fails the inspection, you'll need to fix any issues within 14 days and come back for a free re-assessment. If more than 14 days have passed, you’ll need to pay for a new e-Safety check.

Generally, the fees for a pink slip inspection will be different for each type of light vehicle. You can find more information about the inspection fees on the NSW Government website.

What happens during the inspection?

Car’s assessment.

As mentioned before, if your car is more than 5 years old, it will need to be checked for safety and roadworthiness prior to renewing your registration.

During the assessment, some factors are checked. This includes corrosion, lights, mechanical issues, and tyre conditions. Specifically, the following is assessed:

  • Brake system efficiency, ABS operation, and parking brake
  • Exterior lights functioning
  • Inspect engine bay and driveline for damage and evidence of leaking fluids
  • Wheel bearings, and worn or damaged suspension parts
  • Tyre condition and wear
  • Overall body condition, corrosion, and accident damage
  • Safety features, including wiper blades, airbags, seatbelts, and horns

A pink slip inspection generally lasts between 30 and 45 minutes and is valid for 6 months. It's necessary to assess your car's roadworthiness at a particular time since it may not be reliable in the long term.
