Since 2011 McLaren have worked closely with Pirelli for obvious reasons; Pirelli make some of the best high performance tyres for cars that are quite simply, out of this world.

The latest McLaren has been coined “Long Tail” and is the drop down roof version of the 765lt from 2021. The new 2 step folding roof can be engaged at 50kmph or at a standstill in under 11 seconds.

The new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine now sends 563kW and 800Nm to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, allowing the low-slung 1388kg supercar to launch from 0-100km/h in a claimed 2.8 seconds on the way to a top speed of 330km/h.

The new transmission consists of 7 shorter gears as opposed to 6 + overdrive. This allows the car to wind out a top speed in 7th gear. While in manual mode and using the paddle shifts, the McLaren has a certain race feel about it while cornering and accelerating. This is all happening while you are literally riding inches from the tarmac.

Pirelli has been making tyres for McLaren for a long time, 11 years to be exact (at the time of writing), but of course Pirelli’s history in the hypercar arena goes a long way back. The P Zero was first developed in 1987 as a tailor made fit to some of the most prestigious cars of the era.

Innovative materials and compounds combined with the tread pattern design have produced extraordinary results.

Some of the features include:

• Deep inner longitudinal grooves, designed to help the prevention of aquaplaning
• Rigid center block to conform in cornering but snap back to shape when exiting

Note, this is simply not a lot of fancy stuff without substance.It is a quality, high performance tyre developed from decades of motorsport knowledge. The Trofeo R is a race spec tyre and is most at home on the track. Remember to always drive to the speed limits and of course, your ability.
