Pirelli makes first FSC approved tyre
In a world moving very quickly to sustainability, the tyre industry is doing everything it can to keep up. There are a number of key materials used in the making of a tyre and yes, rubber is one of them.
Previously, tyre rubber was a chemically formed material produced in a way that can be detrimental to our environment. When you combine steel belts, beads and rubber together in a large machine, the result is known as a green tyre, however it’s far from the eco green we look for these days.
Step in Pirelli and the new Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved tyre. A world first, this tyre is made from natural rubbers sourced from specific locations around the world.
The tyre has been designed and built for the new BMW X5 dual drive Plugin Hybrid. Producing a high-level of torque the XDrive45e requires a serious tyre and that's why BMW chose the P Zero by Pirelli.
The P Zero has long been the tyre of choice for BMW for many years and with the German company’s latest Hybrid eclectic X5 it was a perfect match to pair it with an environmentally friendly tyre approved by the FSC.
So what makes a tyre environmentally sustainable?
The natural rubbers used in the reinforced tyre sidewalls are a derivative of wood cellulose sourced from forest plantations. These plantations are managed for biological diversity while providing benefits to the local communities.
These FSC approved practices ensure a sustainable future for workers through an economically viable plantation industry. It is something that Pirelli has been working towards since 2017 and the Pirelli Sustainable Natural Rubber Policy.
