Are cheap tyres worth the cost? Pirelli Premium Spotlight
Quite often we see drivers come in to purchase new tyres for their car, 4X4 or SUV only to hear them request the cheapest tyres possible. While you might think that this makes sense from a financial point of view, it may end up costing you more in the long run.
When purchasing an entry level tyre on a tight budget, you’re quite often you’re leaving fuel economy, wet weather safety, tyre longevity and braking performance out of the equation.
Throwing a set of budget tyres on your car may get you out of a last minute bind, but did you know that here at Tyrepower Kogarah we offer Zip Pay and Zip Money in-store?
What is Zip Pay?
If you’ve never heard of, or used, Zip Money before - it’s simple. We’ll take you through a few things you’ll need to know before you get started.
Zip Pay is a 0% interest credit account (providing you pay the item off within up to 60 days). With credit account limits in 3 tiers, ($350, $500 and $1000) there is certainly room to step up to a higher performing tyre to keep you and your family safer on the roads.
For wheel and tyre packages over $1000, you have the option of splitting the payment across a debit card and Zip Pay, or the opportunity to take advantage of a Zip Money account. The terms differ slightly between Zip Pay and Zip Money (a full rundown can be found here) but the basic in-store use is the same. Choose your tyres/wheels and pay nothing in-store on the day! If you pay the entire amount off before the end of the next calendar month, you won’t even incur an account fee.
You can create a Zip account ahead of time, or sign up in-store. The approval process typically takes just a few minutes.
What’s the big deal about premium tyres and why do they cost more?
Let’s take a quick look at a few premium tyres from Pirelli and focus on some of the features that you won’t find on the cheapest all-rounder tyres you can find for your car.
For an SUV such as a Ford Everest, Toyota Rav4 or Holden Captiva, a tyre like the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season is very popular for drivers who cover a lot of miles. These tyres boast excellent low rolling resistance to improve fuel economy, as well as having low road noise. These are available with run flat technology and 4 large longitudinal grooves for class leading aquaplaning resistance. This tyre has a lot to offer over most of the cheaper tyres available on the market.
As we’re moving from winter into the warmer months of spring, more sports cars are being brought out of sheds and garages. If you’re looking at taking your car out for a drive through the Royal National Park, it would be silly to put the cheapest tyres possible on your car. This is especially the case when the risk of summer ice (greasy roads after rain) is high. We would recommend a touring or high performance tyre like those available in the Pirelli P Zero range. With a high silica content these ultra high performance tyres will function great on wet and dry roads.
Winter has taken its toll on many of the nearby off-road tracks and trails. If you haven’t been to your favourite track in a few months, you may find that it’s no longer recognisable. Getting a cheap All Terrain (AT) or Mud Terrain (MT) could result in a puncture, tyres coming off the bead or experience a lack of traction.
Going for a higher end tyre like the Pirelli Scorpion MTR won’t necessarily gain you more traction off-road, but it will give you a few extra features to help ensure you and your rig make it safely back home. Reinforced sidewalls minimise cutting and tearing on rocky surfaces while the sidewalls also feature extra rubber to protect your alloy rims from damage.
