Let’s talk All Terrain Tyres
Own an SUV or 4WD? Do you use it for the everyday commute, and plan to take it on off-road adventures? Let’s talk All Terrain tyres.
All Terrain (AT) Tyres, are a compromise between on-road and off-road capabilities. If you drive in both an urban environment and off-road on gravel roads, dirt tracks and enjoy a little 4WD adventure here and there, then read on - AT tyres may suit your driving needs.
AT tyres are stronger, and have a deeper, more aggressive tread than Highway Terrain (HT) tyres. This means that they are less likely to experience punctures than a HT tyre and are well suited to off-road adventures whilst still being safe for urban driving. In off-road situations where surfaces may be less than ideal, AT tyres will provide your 4WD with ample grip, which can help you to avoid a lot of hassles when on the beach or out in the bush. Due to their stronger sidewalls, they are capable of carrying heavier loads, and running at higher pressures than HT tyres - AT tyres have a moderate speed symbol and load index.
As with any purchase that you make, opting for a quality set of AT tyres will save you a lot of hassles later on. The strength and durability of AT tyres does vary. Those with light truck (LT) construction are stronger. Generally speaking, they are tough and durable, capable of carrying extra-heavy loads or running at higher pressures. The strength and pattern styles do differ between manufacturers. Ultimately, you need to focus on your intended use and be sure to refer back to your owner’s manual or vehicle placard for tyre recommendations.
