The 2019 Geneva International Motor Show
It’s March, which means that the all-important Geneva International Motor Show has just been held. This year saw a total attendance of 602,000 visitors and 151 world and European debuts.
Amongst these debuts was the Audi Q4 e-Tron, an all-electric crossover, which is proof that the electric revolution is well underway and not one to be ignored. Due to launch in late 2020, or early 2021, the Q4 e-Tron will be Audi’s fifth all-electric model, and a cheaper offering than its predecessors. Audi claim that it will be the first affordable A-segment battery electric SUV.
Generating considerable talk was McLaren, the British supercar brand, who chose the Geneva Motor Show as their moment to reveal that they are currently working on an entirely new project. McLaren felt the need to produce a more ‘road trip friendly’ car and claim this new car will break the rules of the traditional Grand Tourer, and will not be a part of a series, but rather, it will stand alone as a unique model.
Then there was Bugatti’s La Voiture Noire, which simply translates to ‘The Black Car’. It has been claimed that the La Voiture Noire is the most expensive new car to have ever been produced. Despite this, it has already been sold to an anonymous Bugatti enthusiast for a cool $17.6 million. Before you whip out your credit cards or start buying up lottery tickets - this is a special, one-off car, commissioned for luxury over speed.
Turning our attention to tyres at the Geneva International Motor Show, Pirelli did not disappoint, revealing an extensive line up of innovations. Recognised by performance car fans worldwide, Pirelli are well known for their partnerships within the prestige car sector, supplying many of them with OE tyres. Their reveals included the new P Zero Winter tyre, the first winter tyre that has the same performance capabilities as that of a summer tyre. This now means that Pirelli offer every type of tyre to equip the world’s most sporting and prestigious cars.
Also revealed, was the new Elect sidewall markings, yet another nod to the growing popularity of the electric car market during the Geneva International Motor Show. Pirelli’s Elect sidewall markings indicate tyre features that are complementary to electric cars or plug-in hybrids. Such features include low rolling resistance, which helps to maximise the car’s range, and a reduction in noise to emphasise the quiet inside the cabin that is a distinct feature of the electric car.
Lastly, Pirelli announced colour edition as OE as recognition to the increasing need for personalisation within the prestige car manufacturing market. Available in red, yellow, blue and white - these tyres are sure to turn heads.
